I officially have a problem when it comes to my drawing equipment and stationary! As a designer, having the right equipment makes your design process so much for enjoyable and efficient. Here's a few of my must-haves!
As I've said, I've a beautiful notebook for just about every scenario but every freelance graphic designer should have a dotted notebook. These are so useful when you're designing logos or creating some type, as the dots provide the necessary guides. My favourites are the Extra Lage Softback Moleskin dotted notebook and A5 hardback dotted Leuchtturm 1917.
Your design process should always start on paper! This is so conducive for being creative. If you are limited by programmes, you'll struggle to create something really unique. Design it first, and then find a way to create it on the computer. My favourite pencil to work with is this Staedtler mechanical pencil with a 2mm lead. Be sure to grab the sharpener too, as the lead is fairly soft and best used with sharp point for accuracy.
When designing, say a logo, I'll usually start by drawing a whole load of designs using either pencil or fine liners. It's so important to get down every idea you may have - regardless whether you like it or not! It may inspire something amazing. I'll then create a few different designs, accurately using a steel rule and protractor on either dotted or squared paper :)
As a freelancer, people have to buy into you as well! By creating a great first impression you can build long-term relationships with clients and start building a network of clients that rely on you for any of their creative work.
A weekly planner is so important to stay organised - I love this marble one my sister bought me but you may find it better to have all your important meetings on your phone.
The right hand notebook is a ruled notebook, which I use to make notes during a meeting. This a beauuuuutiful leather Leuchttrum notebook, which couple of my amazing friends bought me for my birthday, in my branding colours and embossed with my name! Love it.
I love this pencilcase - the perfect present for me from my housemates :) You're trying to be hired for your creative and design skills so you need to leave that impression with every interaction you have with your (potential) clients!
Hope you find something useful here! Hope you have a great week, L x
